Strophes in Songs
How many strophes does a typical song in the corpus contain? The chart shows the distribution of strophe counts per song (1–20) for the selected archive. Strophes are TEI <lg> elements in the annotated corpus XML.

The six-strophe norm
Six-strophe songs are the single most common form in about half of the archives, aligning with the verse–verse–chorus–verse–chorus–outro pattern widespread in popular song. At the full-corpus level, however, the nominal peak now sits at one strophe — a statistical artefact of the HipHop archive (see next box). Excluding that spike, six strophes remains the structural centre of gravity for the corpus.
HipHop: the one-strophe outlier
The HipHop archive shows a strong spike at one strophe — over 84% of its songs — reflecting the annotation practice where individual rap verses are often treated as standalone units rather than as parts of a multi-strophe song structure. Because the archive is so large, this spike alone outweighs every other bin combined and is what pulls the full-corpus peak down to one strophe.
Singer-songwriter variation
Konstantin Wecker's archive shows the flattest distribution of all nine artists — barely a sixth of his songs share the modal strophe count, and over 40% run to ten or more strophes, far above any other artist archive. This reflects the tradition of longer, narrative ballads where strophes accumulate to tell a story, in contrast to the more compact verse–chorus format of commercial pop. Hannes Wader's archive, despite a similar narrative reputation, is closer to the corpus norm, peaking early at four strophes.
Structural annotation note
Strophe boundaries are marked with TEI <lg> elements in the corpus. Repeated chorus strophes with identical text are each counted separately if they appear as distinct elements in the XML. Songs that appear as single-strophe units may be entire tracks whose internal structure was not subdivided during annotation.
