Single-strophe songs: an annotation effect, not a musical one
About 85% of songs in the HipHop Songs archive are recorded as a single strophe, against 11% in Chart Songs. This is not a property of the music but of the source texts: many rap lyrics in the corpus are stored as one undivided block rather than segmented into verse and hook. Toggle HipHop off to see the rest of the corpus undistorted. Because this archive is so large, the effect also spills into corpus-wide counts (see Songs per Year β).
Otherwise, songs cluster at 5β7 strophes
For songs with more than one strophe, the distribution peaks at five to seven strophes (median six) β the standard pop template of two or three verses around a recurring chorus, often with an intro and outro. Songs of ten or more strophes are uncommon and concentrate in archives with longer narrative or political song traditions, such as Konstantin Wecker and Hannes Wader.
