Etaoin shrdlu is the sequence of the 12 most frequent letters in English, named after the Linotype keyboard layout. Character frequency fingerprint
The 12-character sequence compresses the archive's character inventory into a single readable token. For standard German prose the reference ranking begins with e–n–i–s–a–r–t–d–h–g–l–o. Deviations in the Songkorpus – a consonant climbing into the top six, or an unexpected vowel dropping out – signal register-specific phenomena such as dense rhyme repetition, or genre-typical refrains. The sequence thus serves as a compact diagnostic for corpus heterogeneity.
Cross-archive comparison
Because the sequence is derived from rank order rather than absolute counts, archives of vastly different sizes produce directly comparable 12-character tokens.
Across all 15 archive views, position 1 (E) is invariant. Position 2 is N in 13 of 15 views but I in Chart Songs and HipHop Songs; position 3 is I in 13 of 15 views but N in Chart Songs and HipHop Songs. Positions 4–6 vary considerably across archives, with multiple characters competing at similar frequencies.
